Anyone else here enjoy TED Talks as much as I do? I have yet to listen to one that was not interesting, informative and worthwhile of my time.
Here's a link to one (under 10 minutes) on the TEDMED channel bringing us up to date on the "war on cancer." TEDMED link
I always think it is impolite and disrespectful of others' time to simply post a link to an article or video without giving my own comments about it or a synopsis, so without too much of a spoiler, here's my take-aways:
* Total US cancer rates flattened; major causes identified
** Smoking declined (but still 20% smokers in US population; more improvement opportunity)
** obesity/diet/inactivity increasing; impact lags, so greatest impact (unfavorable) may still come
* Discussed root causes of overtreatment; some discussion of prostate cancer
* Discussed today's continued use of Virchow's "profiling" of cancer from 1840s to "define cancer"; particularly relevant to prostate cancer
* Discussed need/opportunity to be more scientific in 21st century with genomic profiling
(FYI the talk was delivered 2012)
