The lymph node imaging Combidex MRI is now back after being discontinued 3 years ago due to the unavailability of the nano particle contrast agent. Combidex has been more effective in detecting small lymph node cancers than the C11 PET scans. Combidex is able to detect cancers at 2mm vs 4mm for the PET scan and detects significantly more cancers in the 2mm to 7mm range. Above 7mm the scans are equal in effectiveness.
The scan is only available in Holland and is hoped to be available in more locations in the future. I'm glad that this tool is now available again for those patients with suspected mets. i had this scan in early 2009 and it was very useful in determining my treatments.

Folks are being guided to Mat for the C-11 Cholene scans and I understand why. I saw the presentations of that scan from Mayo while in DC for a lobby campaign. They said in that presentation that the C-11 Choline scan had to date presented the most sensitive scan in trials at that point. Because they have been working on that scan for over 6 years it stands to reason that they are the best team using the scan. A similar story exists for CDU and Dr. Bahn. CDU in other hands is not as effective according to those proponents and I reason that the same is true for C-11 Choline.
The difference may be that when Duke Bahn hangs up the gloves that CDU may die out. If he is the "only" guy whom can effectively use the technology then it will die out. The C-11 Choline has a better fate in store for it as several institutions are gearing of for that scan.
I could be totally wrong on that aspect, but at this time we dod not have the data on which is better ~ Combidex in Holland, or C-11 Choline in Rochester.
