This is just my commentary for the December GU Committee call from SWOG.
The Affordable Care Act in itself does not provision funds for cancer research. But it does make a requirement that all clinical trials have at least one patient representative for clinical trials. At SWOG we're set and fully functional for prostate cancer as I have that roll. But for many other cancers we are lacking. Same is true at ASCO. With January 1 nearing, there will a need for Patient Advocates for such trials and there are several spots that need to be filled. The trial groups that handle the NCI trials are rich in physician skillets but as I have found research still benefits by having a trial PA that is not a zealot but rather helpful with the goals of clinical trial research.
