At SWOG this year, Dr. Peter Van Veldhuizen, whom I've been a colleague at SWOG for years now, invited me to dinner with the Kansas U staff. A very delightful dinner it was.
Flashback. Most here know that I had a great relationship with the great advocate, but the late David Emerson who lost his life at age 49 to prostate cancer after a long fight. We went to capital hill together and shared music and love frequently. He always said he loved his physician Dr. V.
Wow!!!!
Pete was David's oncologist and tonight the epiphany took place at the dinner table. We sat right across from each other with the KU staff flanking us and I asked. "OK you KU guys I had a very special friend that was treated at KU". Pete response he was my "very most special patient".
We both shared a tear together. I showed him pictures of David and I advocating PCa on capital hill and he knew who I was. He already knew who I was at SWOG, but he and I both never connected the lines. Tonight we did. I remember David telling me how much he loved his doctor V. and I remember telling him we both had a special Dr V (Vogelzang for me).
Small world this is. But a wonderful world. David was right. he had a very terrific doctor. And he also had a caring friend in him. Pete attended Davids FLHW.org functions. And tonight we remembered our friend tearfully.
