Hey folks,
My diary entry for PCRI 2014...
Just reporting from Los Angeles at the Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) 2014 Conference. Along with me is PCAF staffer Allen Edel and we had a great day I think. While promoting this website we had quite a few folks give us very positive reactions to the vision and content of the website. But also cool, we got more support from the professional community. In very nice conversation today, Dr. Richard Lam of the Prostate Oncology Specialists group in Marina Del Rey, Ca. opened the door for multiple webinars in partnership for top of the line advocacy and educational material. He has committed to doing webinars and will get with Drs. Scholz and Turner to also provide availability. This could take some planning and while he suggested 2 or 3 a year, I expressed great thanks but that we'd be happy with an annual webinar on advanced approaches they use and present at PCRI, and also a panel member here on our Medical panel. TBD. Stay tuned.
And on that front. Maha Hussain did a really terrific presentation at PCRI. Covering from what Nick Vogelzang presented here in our webinars ~ the CHAARTED results ~ she also presented on her controversial intermittent hormonal therapy versus continuous hormonal therapy research in men with mCRPC. But her best piece was her response to Dr. Mark Moyad's very poignant and candid question on the death threats she received for opposing immediate release of Provenge in 2007. She was not alone in those threats. Also, respected and accomplished, Dr. Howard Scher of Memorial Sloan Kettering received those threats as he too took that position with Hussain while serving as a panelist for the FDA. Both doctors supported compassionate care at any time with Provenge but that was lost in the discussion. Ironically both were members of the research teams that eventually proved efficacy was positive with Provenge.
Hussain's response was moving. To the effect (not verbatim):
You know where I'm from, right? Iraq. I grew up with a very brutal leader, Saddam Hussain? I came to the US where the best opportunity to succeed was. Where you are free to express your opinion and beliefs, and enjoy freedom. (A rousing applause). It took me coming here serving on that panel to for the first time feel that my life was in danger.
I was sitting with friend and last years Pinchot Award winner, Joel Nowak. Like me, he also has had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Hussain in person. I can say that we both agree she is one very smart lady. And that her contributions to prostate cancer research, both before and after that event, have brought us major changes to standard of care protocol for men with metastatic prostate cancer. Not much else to say...
I caught up with Maha early in the morning and we exchanged pleasantries. Later we spoke a bit about PCAF and she agreed (conditionally) to be a panelist here.
Two PCAF panelists in one day. Two very good panelists in one day. OK it's too early to say two, but having access to Dr. Hussain and the big three in Marina Del Rey is a very positive development. I asked her if she could hook us up with a pathologist that could present how the art is done and she said she will help us out
Allen was not to be outdone. Tall Allen, a gentle giant, was very popular for good reason. The patient community, including myself, highly respect his knowledge. But today he was serving double duty for our website and for the group we shared the table with so that we could lock down a PCRI opportunity....haha a table right in between Malecare.com and Rick Profits PAACT table. Let's just say that I was enjoying a great day. Darryl, Joel, Allen, Rick, oh, and the very well known awesome wife of Joel, Wendy Leibowitz...I felt like a small guy in a crowd.
Hah, speaking of small guys it was great meeting Stu Hyatt in person. We have been friends for a while, like a lot of my Facebook buddies, and partners against the disease, but we today were real live buddies.
Awesome.
This would repeat itself. Lupronjim... We now have met coast to coast! Love ya big guy! And to about fifty others that came up to me just say hi today, May God bless you!
I have more but I'm going to bed.
Anyone know the 2015 Pinchot award winner?
